The simple answer is to check your OWNER'S MANUAL, rather than checking with a friend at the shop, or at the dealer. Read what the intervals are, what is recommended, and pay attention to what "severe" driving conditions are. Some vehicle manuals say that city driving, or stop and go traffic, is "severe" and you should change your oil more often with "severe" driving.
A dealer actually told me to change my oil at 10,000 miles if I used synthetic oil. It doesn't say that anywhere in my owner's manual. The oil change light comes on at 5,000 miles, and the manual says 5,000 miles.
Read the manual, carefully, and protect your warranty and your engine by doing what the manufacturer actually calls for. For most newer vehicles, the right answer is somewhere between 4,000 and 6,000 miles for most of us.
If your car or truck has over 75,000 miles, consider a lower interval, and "high mileage" motor oil. It will pay dividends in added miles for your engine.
